{"id":445,"date":"2009-11-03T17:14:19","date_gmt":"2009-11-03T16:14:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/conorpower.ie\/?p=445"},"modified":"2009-11-03T17:22:48","modified_gmt":"2009-11-03T16:22:48","slug":"headgear-issue-takes-attention-away-from-gaa-books-blizzard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/conorpower.ie\/?p=445","title":{"rendered":"Headgear Issue takes attention away from GAA Books Blizzard"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Concerns of <strong>safety<\/strong> seem to be dominating a lot of the decision-making by the <strong>GAA national council<\/strong>.\u00a0 The attempted halting of the pitch invasion at the <strong>Hurling All-Ireland<\/strong> final and the new rule requiring the wearing of protective head gear by all players (even goalkeepers) were decisions that were taken in the name of improving safety for players.<\/p>\n<p>The debate is going to continue on both issues for a time to come.\u00a0 From my own slightly <strong>cynical point of view<\/strong>, when I hear organisations talking about <strong>safety issues<\/strong>, I feel the pervasive presence of an<strong> insurance company whispering in the ears of decision-makers<\/strong>.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also linked, perhaps, to the <strong>growing presence of the GPA<\/strong> and it represents, perhaps, <strong>a marking of lines<\/strong> &#8211;
