{"id":395,"date":"2009-10-12T18:19:52","date_gmt":"2009-10-12T17:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/conorpower.ie\/?p=395"},"modified":"2009-10-23T10:13:20","modified_gmt":"2009-10-23T09:13:20","slug":"1959-reunion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/conorpower.ie\/?p=395","title":{"rendered":"1959 Reunion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_397\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-397\" href=\"http:\/\/conorpower.ie\/?attachment_id=397\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-397\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-397\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" src=\"http:\/\/conorpower.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/6-1957-Panel-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"6 1957 Panel\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-397\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heroes of the Past<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After a highly entertaining <strong>County Final<\/strong> yesterday, there was a special event organised by the <strong>Waterford County Board<\/strong> in honour of the <strong>1959 All-Ireland<\/strong> winning senior team.<\/p>\n<p>As it was the <strong>50th anniversary<\/strong> of that last AI crown, there were VIP invitations to all the surviving team members and\/or partners or representatives.\u00a0 In addition, there were also the captains of the county-winning teams from the last 25 years.\u00a0 These included such luminaries as <strong>Fergal Hartley<\/strong> (who was actually still in action for <strong>Ballygunner<\/strong> on the day), <strong>Ken McGrath<\/strong> and, representing <strong>Tallow&#8217;s famous 2-in-a-row<\/strong> from &#8217;84 and &#8217;85, <strong>Kieran Ryan<\/strong> and <strong>Mick Beecher<\/strong> respectively.<\/p>\n<p>I was fortunate enough to be there along with my mother and it was great to meet some of the <strong>Waterford legends <\/strong>whom I had not met before, as well as some of the sons-of and daughters-of.\u00a0 Strangely enough, this was the first time that I had met people &#8220;like me&#8221;, so it felt rather like a strange and very nice sort-of support group where there were conversations about what it was like being &#8220;sons-of&#8221; and &#8220;daughters-of&#8221;, <strong>hurling books<\/strong> and <strong>Waterford<\/strong> <strong>Crystal <\/strong>trophies &#8211; soon to be pure collectors&#8217; items.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"..\/?page_id=17\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Click here\" src=\"http:\/\/conorpower.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/Front-cover-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Front cover\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\" \/><\/a>\u201c<strong>My Father: A Hurling Revolutionary, the life and times of Ned Power<\/strong>\u201d is out on paperback at the end of November 2009.\u00a0 <a href=\"..\/?page_id=17\">Click here<\/a> for further information, <a href=\"..\/?page_id=17\" target=\"_self\"><strong>pre-order<\/strong><\/a> and excerpt.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a highly entertaining County Final yesterday, there was a special event organised by the Waterford County Board in honour of the 1959 All-Ireland winning senior team.
